Relax with a Blooming Cup

Sanctuary T White Lily Blooming Tea

Unwind from the 2010 winter holiday rush with an aromatic cup of blooming tea.

Blooming teas are small bundles of tea leaves that are intricately bound together in a special way so that when steeped it blooms like a flower. Not only is watching the unfurling–or blooming–of the tea flower beautiful, but it’s a perfect way to relax and to retreat from the seasonal rush.

Our personal favorite blooming tea for the wintertime is our White Lily, a light green tea that steeps into a floral cup . Try steeping the blooming tea in a glass cup or a wine glass to make the occasion a little more special! So curl up with your blanket, watch a beautiful blooming tea unfurl, and sip a decadent cup.

Whether you are hosting a holiday party or you want to make a wintertime occasion extra cozy, this tea-inspired recipe will make even the most wallet-friendly bottle of wine taste decadent and aromatic.

It’s the perfect dessert (or replacement to your glass of Port); and the loose leaf teas add a special depth to the overtones of the wine that will warm you up from the inside out. • 1 cup of red wine
  • 4 tablespoons of loose leaf tea (try our suggestions above! or any loose leaf tea with strong cinnamon/spices)
  • sugar

Directions:

  1. Pour wine and loose leaf tea into a small pan
  2. Bring to a simmer (do not let boil)
  3. Add sugar to taste (we like to add 2 tablespoons per serving)
  4. Strain tea leaves
  5. Serve & Enjoy!

Avoid that Holiday Weight Gain with Tea!

Sanctuary T Loose Leaf Teas: Best way to avoid holiday weight gain is to drink good loose leaf tea

Everyone loves the endless array of foods during the holiday, but no one loves the seemingly unavoidable weight gain that comes with all those cookies and that slice of ham.

So rather than stressing out about calories and exercise, we tea lovers have a secret tip to help avoid those undesirable pounds: drink tea before, during, and after any meal. It may sound too simple or even stupid, but here’s why sipping on tea before, during ,and after your holiday feast might help avoid that horrific holiday fifteen:

Why before? Filling up your tummy with a warm, fulfilling cup can help satiate your appetite before  you grab for the fork. And studies show that certain teas such as green tea (we love a good cup of loose leaf Genmaicha or Gyokuro) might naturally help shed pounds. So if you sip on a nice cup of tea before hitting the plates, you are less likely to consume everything in sight.

Why during? Pairing a nice tea to go with your meal can help you pace yourself. Eating during the holidays should be like marathon not a sprint!  And as you slow down and sip on tea, you might even enhance the flavors of the food. Any black tea like Assam or Golden Yunnan is a great compliment to heavy holiday dishes.

Why after? Tea after a meal can help digest even the most oily of foods. So drink a little Pu-erh or Peppermint, and help your stomach out. Digesting well and making yourself feel satisfied is the key to not overeating. Make that sip of tea a way to cleanse your mouth and a signal to put down your fork.

In short if you are worried about over-stuffing yourself, trying drinking tea to help. We’re not saying that eating all the bacon wrapped appetizers is a good idea, but we’re saying that tea can be a comforting friend when trying to remember to enjoy yourself rather than overeating during the holidays. So sip a good steep and enjoy.

Sip A Little Tropical

Sanctuary T Loose Leaf Tea with Coconut Milk

When the weather outside is frightful, the tropics do sound delightful!

But since we cannot go, we’ve decided to warm ourselves up by putting a tropical twist onto our loose leaf tea! (Sorry we couldn’t keep up the rhyme).

We figure if you can’t be lounging in the sun, sipping on a beach-inspired cup of loose leaf tea in the warmth of your home is probably the next best thing. To get that tropical-flavor, we start by steeping a big cup of fruity tea. Our favorites Lychee tea, Playa del Coco, and Toasted Almond. Then we simply add a dash of coconut milk (whether it is reduced fat or regular, just make sure not to add too much).

Sure a tropical hot tea is not the same as a vacation getaway, but it’s pretty close! So sip away your winter chills with a tropical steep.

The Perfect Cup for Kids & Kids at Heart

Loose Leaf Tea and Marshmallows: Chocolate Chai by Sanctuary T

If you enjoyed our last post on sweetening your tea with candy canes or if you (or your kids) have a wild sweet tooth, then try adding some marshmallows to your next cup of loose leaf tea!

We love to add a dash of marshmallows with a splash of milk into a big cup of our Chocolate Chai or Tiramisu Rooibos.  The puffy goodness of the marhmallows adds a sweet tint to the tea that isn’t overpowering and also gives the tea an extra creamy texture. This makes loose leaf tea & marshmallows the ideal treat for kids, and for adults who are kids at heart but still want to be healthy.

While we don’t recommend adding marshmallows to pure loose leaf teas (like Imperial Gunpowder), but feel free to experiment. Who knows maybe a pure green tea will taste swell with marshmallows.

Still not convinced? Just try it out; and soon you’ll see that marshmallows are not just for hot cocoa!

Hot Tea Toddy

Peppermint loose leaf hot toddy

Warm yourself up and melt away your Monday blues with a Hot Tea Toddy! Sure tea is great in it’s traditional cup, but mix in a little liquor to the brew and you’ve got yourself an entire different steep.

One of our favorite Hot Tea Toddy drinks to make is a Peppermint Twist (recipe below)–a mix of our loose leaf Peppermint tea, Frangellico, Kahlua and Bourbon. The coolness of the peppermint complements the rich hazelnut and chocolate-like overtones (of Frangellico and Kahlua) in a way that will warm you up from the inside out. And the added kick of Bourbon will keep you feeling rosy and toasty.

So next time thirty-two degree weather and extra wind chill gets you feeling bleak, make yourself a Tea Toddy!

Peppermint Twist:
Ingredients:

  • Loose Leaf Peppermint Tea
  • Frangellico
  • Kahlua
  • Bourbon

Directions (makes one cup):

  1. Make one strong cup of Peppermint Tea (two tablespoons of loose leaf tea per cup)
  2. Splash in 1/2 ounce of Frangellico, 1/2 ounce of Kahlua, and 1/2 ounce of Bourbon
  3. Stir
  4. Enjoy hot!

A Bathful of Tea

Sanctuary T's very own loose leaf tea bath salts

There is no doubt that winter is here: the trees are naked without yellow leaves, the wind has a bite to it, and there is no sunlight around 4pm. So if the winter chill is getting you down and jet setting off to Hawaii is not an option, try soaking yourself in a big bath filled with tea.

We personally love soaking in a bath steeped with a few spoonfuls of our Wild Rose Bath Salt–a blend of young wild rose buds, bath salts, black tea, lavender, elderflower and French vervain! Not only will the smell of lavender and the wild rose buds make you feel completely relaxed, but the black tea also acts as an astringent and antibacterial remedy. And did we mention that the dead sea salt will help exfoliate your skin while loosening your muscles?!

If you don’t have tea infused bath salts, then you can also get these similar tea bath benefits by literally steeping some tea in your bath. Try filling a few tea bags with old loose leaf tea and steeping it into the tub. This is a perfect way to reuse old tea while also treating yourself. But be warned: if you don’t smell a fragrant aroma from your old tea, your tea is probably too old for even steeping in baths and you probably won’t get the same experience.

Sip on some Chamomile Lavender while steeping your body in tea and you will feel like you just came out of the spa!
