Even though July is right around the corner, it’s not too late to celebrate National Iced Tea month.
Since the record breaking highs tend to be in the months of July and August, making the perfect glass of tea can be a handy skill to have. Making iced tea may sound like a piece of cake, but when you factor in serving size and much ice may dilute the flavor, there are a few things you’ll have to take into account.
The main rule of thumb is to double the amount of tea to water, and for herbal teas, double the steeping time as well. With that general rule in mind, follow these simple steps:
- Double the amount of loose leaf tea used in your brew (as compared to hot tea). So for traditional iced tea (which is black) use 2 tsps to 8oz of water.
- Add your preferred sweetener while hot. Honey works well, or try our rock candy sugar sticks.
- After the hot tea finishes brewing, pour it into a glass filled almost to the top with ice. The instant cooling will keep the flavor and aroma of the tea.
- Garnish with lemon, sprig of mint, a dash of juice or even a slice of ginger root.
